Elaine and I were next door neighbors and best friends in high school. We kept in touch throughout the years. She felt sick on 9/11/2001, and since her school was closed the next day, she went to the ER. While being examined, she died. It must have been her heart, but no one is sure exactly what the cause of death was. She was 59. Her career had been teaching children with Special Needs.

She is survived by her husband, Barry, 3 children -- Drew, Julie, and Jason -- and 5 grandchildren.

I miss her and know she would have been delighted to be involved in the upcoming reunion.

Elaine and I went to summer school together at Penn State in the summer of 1961 so that we could graduate from college in June of 1963 instead of January of 1964. We were roommates. Since we were both regular commuting students at Temple this was our first experience being away at college. We had a great summer living in the dorms and tasting the whole college life. We even picked up 12 credits. She became one of my close friends from that experience. I miss her.

yes, I miss her as well. She was one of my closest friends in high school. We did many "naughty" things after school. We shared a lot- even boyfriends!
Recently I bumped into her brother, Irv, who recently lost his wife.
She will be missed at the reunion by many.

This appeared in a local newspaper 2001.

Loesche School recalls a very popular teacher
At a ceremony in the school auditorium last week, the Loesche School community remembered one of its own — former teacher Elaine Cardonick, who died in September.
A teacher since 1964, Cardonick particularly worked with special-needs children, such as youths with the developmental disorder autism.
According to her colleagues, the Somerton resident was as dedicated to teaching in her 36th year on the job as she was in her first.
“She was just wonderfully dedicated,” said Loesche teacher Linda Alten, who organized the memorial service. “She spent hours at home working above and beyond her responsibilities to ensure that her children had every opportunity.”
Cardonick, whose husband was a longtime student counselor at Loesche, became ill last fall but refused to take a leave from her job because she feared that it would disrupt the progress many of her students had made.
Faculty members said the teacher reported feeling ill on Sept. 11. When classes at Loesche recessed early for the day because of the national tragedy, Cardonick went home, where her condition deteriorated.
She died that night in a local hospital. Officials at the school said they still weren’t sure what caused her death.
Last week’s ceremony honored Cardonick’s dedication to children and education. A memorial plaque was dedicated and will be mounted at the school.
Also in attendance to laud the teacher’s life were U.S. Rep. Robert Borski (D-3rd dist.), who presented a copy of a speech he made on the U.S. House floor; City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski (D-6th dist.), who presented a Council citation in memory of the educator; and Northeast Academic Area Office leader Dr. Harris Lewin, who spoke of the late teacher’s dedication.
